NEBOSH IGC Orientation

Syllabus Structure, Assessment Style, Study Plan, Command Words & Exam Expectations

This opening module orients learners to exactly what the revised qualification requires, starting with the structural change itself: Unit IG1 is now named GIC1 and Unit IG2 is now GIC2, an administrative renaming only — the content depth, difficulty, and international recognition of the qualification are unchanged. GIC1's assessment format is explained in practical detail: an open-book examination delivered within a 24-hour submission window, with roughly five hours of expected active writing time, marked out of 100 with a pass mark of 45, built around realistic workplace scenarios that reward application and analysis rather than memorisation. GIC2's practical, points-based project (out of 60, with 36 needed to pass) is introduced at a high level ahead of its dedicated Module 07 treatment. Command words — the specific instruction verbs NEBOSH uses in every question, such as "identify," "outline," "explain," and "give reasons" — receive focused attention, since misreading a command word costs marks regardless of how strong the underlying knowledge is. The module closes with a realistic 60–80 hour study plan structured around the exam's genuine emphasis on scenario-based application.

Health and Safety Management System

Policy, Organizing, Planning, Implementation, Measurement, Audit and Review Cycle

This module builds the management-system cycle that underpins the entire GIC1 syllabus: policy, organising, planning and implementing, measuring performance, auditing, and reviewing performance, feeding back into policy in a continuous loop. Drafting an effective health and safety policy is practised directly, along with organising structures — roles, responsibilities, competence requirements, and consultation arrangements that give the policy practical effect. Planning and implementation are addressed through the general risk management process that Module 03 builds in depth. Measuring performance distinguishes active measures (inspections, monitoring) from reactive measures (incident and ill-health data), a distinction NEBOSH questions frequently test directly. Audit purpose and scope are introduced at the level GIC1 requires, and management review closes the cycle — ensuring lessons from measurement and audit genuinely feed back into policy and planning rather than sitting in a filed report. Hazard and risk are distinguished clearly, and the general risk assessment process taught throughout the syllabus is practised step by step: identifying hazards, identifying who might be harmed and how, evaluating risk, recording significant findings, and reviewing the assessment periodically. The hierarchy of control is taught as a decision order — elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment as the last resort — the exact structure GIC1 scenario questions expect candidates to apply rather than simply list. Workplace transport covers vehicle-pedestrian segregation, reversing hazards, and site traffic routing. Work at height addresses the fall-prevention-before-fall-arrest hierarchy. Immediate Actions, Evidence Gathering, Root Causes, Recommendations and Reporting

This module sequences the investigation response NEBOSH expects a competent HSE officer to apply, from the first moments after an incident through to organisational learning. Immediate actions are covered first — securing the scene and ensuring casualty care without disturbing evidence prematurely. Evidence-gathering methods follow: witness statements, physical evidence, and documentary records, gathered promptly before memories fade or conditions change. The module then builds the distinction between immediate causes, underlying causes, and root causes that NEBOSH questions consistently probe, since a superficial investigation that stops at the immediate cause routinely loses marks. Recommendations are practised as a specific writing skill: specific, actionable, and proportionate to the root cause identified, rather than generic statements to "improve training" or "be more careful." The module closes on reporting — how incident findings feed directly back into the management-system review cycle built in Module 02, closing the loop between a single incident and genuine organisational improvement.

Safety Culture, Consultation, Competence, Communication and Behavioral Influences

The 2026 syllabus update strengthens its focus on leadership and human factors, and this module builds that content in depth. Safety culture and climate are distinguished as related but different concepts — the underlying values an organisation holds versus the current, observable state of safety at a given moment. Worker consultation is addressed both as a legal expectation and a practical mechanism for surfacing hazards that management alone would miss. Competence is treated as an ongoing assessment and development requirement, not a one-time training record. Communication methods — toolbox talks, safety briefings, and visual signage — are covered for their practical effectiveness in multinational, multilingual GCC contractor workforces. Participants practise producing a proper observation sheet identifying a sufficient number of genuinely distinct hazards, supported by photographs or sketches as the assessment criteria expect, rather than a superficial list. A common examiner-flagged error receives direct attention: rating every identified risk at maximum severity without discrimination, which examiners read as a lack of genuine risk-assessment judgement rather than caution. Control selection is practised against the hierarchy of control from Module 03, prioritising an action plan across immediate, medium, and long-term timescales rather than a single undifferentiated list of fixes.
