Overview
A three-hour recorded programme that takes beginners from a blank AutoCAD screen to accurate, dimensioned and print-ready 2D drawings, built around the drafting workflows used by engineering and contracting firms across the GCC.
Description
Programme Highlights
Self-Paced Recorded Delivery
Three hours of focused video lessons that learners can pause, replay and revisit whenever a project needs it.
Practice on Real Drawings
Every command is applied to practical civil elements such as floor plans, column grids, parking bays and site layouts.
Office-Ready Drafting Standards
Layer naming, metric scales, dimension styles and title blocks that match how GCC consultants expect drawings to be submitted.
Autodesk Accredited
Delivered under Charter Center's Autodesk accreditation, giving beginners a recognised starting point for a CAD and BIM career path.
Course Curriculum: 6 Modules
Interface and Workspace Essentials
Learners begin by opening AutoCAD and understanding how the screen is organised: the ribbon, the command line, the status bar, model space and the navigation tools. The module explains how AutoCAD works through commands and prompts, so that every later tool feels predictable rather than confusing. Learners set up a clean drawing from a template, save it in DWG format, and adopt the file habits that design offices in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar expect, including consistent naming and version control. The module closes with zoom, pan and selection techniques that make moving around a busy site plan quick and controlled.
Precision Drawing: Coordinates, Snaps and Units
Accuracy is what separates a CAD drawing from a sketch. This module introduces drawing units, absolute and relative coordinates, polar input and dynamic input, then shows how Object Snap, Ortho and Polar Tracking lock every line to the exact point intended. Learners draw a simple room layout to real metric dimensions, the standard used in GCC construction documents, and check their work with the Distance and Area measurement tools. Common beginner mistakes, such as lines that look connected but are not, are demonstrated and corrected so that learners build reliable habits from their very first drawing.
Core Draw and Modify Commands
This module covers the commands used in almost every engineering drawing: Line, Polyline, Circle, Arc and Rectangle, followed by Move, Copy, Rotate, Mirror, Offset, Trim, Extend, Fillet and Array. Rather than presenting commands in isolation, each one is applied to a practical civil engineering element such as wall outlines, column grids, parking bays and road kerbs. Learners see how Offset and Trim together replace dozens of manual steps, and how Array produces repetitive layouts in seconds. By the end of the module, learners can construct and edit a complete floor plan outline with confidence and speed.
Layers, Properties and Drawing Organisation
A drawing that looks correct but is poorly organised causes problems for every consultant and contractor who receives it. This module teaches layer creation, colour, linetype and lineweight, and explains how a clear layer structure separates walls, doors, dimensions, text and services. Learners apply a practical layer naming convention similar to those required by consultants on major GCC projects, use Layer States to control visibility, and correct object properties with Match Properties. The module also covers Purge and Audit so that every file shared with the project team is clean, light and easy to coordinate.
Annotation: Text, Dimensions and Hatching
Drawings only become useful when others can read them. This module introduces single and multiline text, text styles, linear, aligned, radius and angular dimensions, and the setup of a dimension style that follows metric drafting practice. Learners add hatch patterns to represent materials such as concrete, blockwork and soil, and use leaders to label key elements. The module explains annotative scaling in simple terms so that text and dimensions print at a consistent size on every sheet, a point frequently raised during drawing reviews by municipalities and consultants in the region.
Blocks, Layouts and Plotting to PDF
The final module brings everything together into a drawing ready for issue. Learners create and insert blocks for repeated items such as doors, windows and furniture, then move from model space to paper space layouts. They set up viewports at standard scales, insert a title block with project information, and configure plot settings and page setups. The module finishes with plotting to PDF and preparing a clean DWG package, the two formats most commonly submitted for consultant review and for municipal permit applications through platforms such as Balady in Saudi Arabia and Dubai Municipality in the UAE.

Course Outcome
On completing this course, learners can set up an AutoCAD drawing correctly, draft accurate 2D geometry to real dimensions, organise work with a professional layer structure, annotate with text, dimensions and hatching, and issue a scaled drawing sheet as PDF and DWG. These are the core drafting skills expected of junior engineers, technicians and draughtsmen in GCC engineering firms, and the foundation for progressing to BIM tools such as Revit.
